Bibliography

Kalenick was born in Russia on Dec. 20, 1855 to Gabriel Deylick and an unknown mother. As a young man he was conscripted into the Russian army in 1876 and fought in the war against the Turks 1877-1878. He was dismissed into the army reserves in 1880. During this time he received an injury that left him without his left eyesight.

Kalenik married Eva Klein daughter of Gottleib and Christina Barbara (Strauch) Klein. Kalenik, age 49, and Eva, age 41, left the village of Tatarovka, district Olgopol, province Podolia, Russia in 1901 with three of their four children. They went to Liverpool, England and boarded the ship "Southwark" on 28 April 1904 and sailed to Montreal, Quebec and arrived on 11 May 1904. They travelled to Neche, North Dakota, U.S.A for a short time. In 1904 he was 49 and they had moved to the RM of Prairie Rose north of Esk, SK area. He obtained entry for a homestead (NE 1/4 20-33-20 W2) in July, 1904. He was a busy man. By April 1905, he had built a 14' x 32' wooden house, and in the next three years he built a 16' x 26' stable and a 14' x 28' granary. He also dug a well. By 1908, he owned four horses, five head of cattle and two pigs. He had broken fifty acres of land and cropped thirty of it by 1908. On August 1, 1908 he received his Canadian Naturalization papers in Saskatoon, SK. In 1921 Anton and Alexandra were no longer living with their parents, but Kalenick still farmed. Tally was still living with them. By 1935, he had retired and continued to live on his farm.

Kalenick and Eva raised three daughters, Anna; Alexandra and Natalia, and one son, Anton. He never learned to speak much English so his grandchildren found it difficult to get to know him. He was very proud of his buggy and would polish it each Saturday so he could take his family to the Lutheran Church service near Esk on Sunday morning, Kalenik and Eva were caring people and often shared their food with neighbours. They farmed about four miles north and one and a half miles east of Esk until their failing health led them to move and live with their son, Anton, and family. Kalenick died at Anton's home on December 28, 1943 and was buried in the Esk Lutheran Cemetery in the RM of Prairie Rose north of Esk, SK.
