Mary Ann Davis was born and raised on a farm in White County, Tennessee. She was the 8th born of 14 children. Her father had moved from North Carolina to Tennessee before the children were born.
Mary Ann was 20 years old when she married Isaac Adcock. Isaac was from Tennessee, and had moved to White County during childhood. He was the 6th born child of 7 children, and also raised in a farming family.
Early in their marriage, Isaac and Mary Ann moved to Hardeman County, where Mary Ann's father and several of her siblings had moved. Mary Ann’s brother moved in with them for a while, and assisted Isaac with the farming. They were tenant farmers at this time, producing crops of Indian corn, oats, and sweet potatoes. They also owned swine and sheep.
A few years later, they moved back to White County and purchased a farm next to Isaac's parents. They were in their 30's by then, and had 7 children. It is assumed they lived there until after Isaac's father passed away, then moved on to the Gainesboro area of Tennessee. This is where they made their home on Sugar Creek, in the old Tick's Mill Community. There is a beautiful description of their home and property in the biography of Isaac Adcock.
Isaac and Mary Ann, in their 50's, were surrounded by grown children and grandchildren living nearby. Isaac's sister lived with their family for a while, and one of Mary Ann's sisters lived in the general area as well. That was in 1880, the last census where Mary Ann can be located. It is unknown when she passed away. Isaac lived another 20 years, and was buried on his property overlooking the orchards.
Three of their sons, Stokley, Tilman, and Mack, later moved to Arkansas, and all three changed the spelling of their surname from Adcock to Adcox in the 1890’s. Another son, William, who remained in Gainesville, had children (James and Thomas) who later changed their spelling to Adcox as well.
PARENTAGE
Mary Ann Davis is assumed to be the daughter of Augustus Parks Davis, based on the following:
Mary Ann Davis and Issac Adcock married in White Co, then moved to Hardeman Co. on 1850 census.
Augustus Davis was also living in White Co TN in 1840, the same as Issac Adcock's family.
Augustus Davis was also in Hardeman Co TN in 1850, same as Isaac Adcock and Mary Ann.
No other Adcock's were living in Hardeman in 1850, so it seems reasonable to conclude Isaac and Mary Ann moved there because of Augustus and other related Davis family members.
Issac Adcock's brother, William Adcock, also married a DAVIS. Martha and Mary Ann Davis are assumed to be sisters, and both Davis girls fit correctly into the age groups of Augustus Davis' 1840 census.
Mary Ann's assumed brother, James Davis, was living with Mary Ann in 1850. James also fits correctly into the age group of Augustus Davis' 1840 census.
