He married Elizabeth Young in March 1860 when he was 21 Years old but she died the following year in June 1861 with no children. He then married Mary Bamford one year later. In 1871 he was living in Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland. In 1881 he was living Wick, Caithness, Scotland
