She is found in the 1861 census for New Brunswick with her family, listed as Louisa Dubois, age 8. The family is characterized as "African Race."
The 1871 census for New Brunswick lists her as Louisa Debois, age 17, African, still living with her parents' family.[1]
Louisa is later found in the 1880 Census for Bangor, Maine, listed as a black servant, age 26, living with the Babcock family, who are white.[2]
The Deboise/Dubois family is also mentioned in this study of the Cornelison family (and related black families) who were living in New Brunswick since the mid-18th century.[3]
Notes
A possible source is the 1900 Census for Brooklyn, New York, in which a Louise De Boise is listed as a single servant, age 44, born Aug 1855 in "Canada Eng." It looks as though a B for black was over-written with a W.[4]
