Residencies and Baptist Ministry
Baptists from Annapolis to Lunenburg: Mr. Whitman Morton was the first Baptist to settle in New Germany (Lunenburg), and he, along with Mr. Henry DeLong, brother of Rev. Thomas DeLong, and a Methodist Class Leader, started the first Sunday School and prayer meetings which were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Hawkesworth, at Hawkesworth Hill (present day [Willard] Eisnor’s Hill). In 1834, three or four Baptists settled in 'New Germany' and a few years later a small school house was built at the foot of Hawkesworth Hill where meetings were held. Settlers came from Annapolis and located throughout the wilderness in 1838 and soon the schoolhouse became too small for “Sabbath Gatherings”. [9]

"It all began on Saturday, April 14th, 1842, when, according to previous appointment, a small group of people met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Hawkesworth, who resided at Hawkesworth Hill, for the purpose of forming the first New Germany United Baptist Church. Rev. Bennett Taylor commenced divine service by reading and prayer, after which Rev. Thomas DeLong preached an interesting sermon and then moved to organize the church." [9]

In the 1861 Census of Canada, at age 63 years, Thomas C Delong is recorded as living at Queens, Nova Scotia. [10]

In the 1871 Census of Canada, at age 73 years, born 1798 in Nova Scotia, Canada; Thomas C. Delong was a resident in the West Halifax District (#196), the French village Sub-district. His religion is Baptist and the census form show his origin as French [nationality error]. [11]

Death
The Reverend Thomas DeLong passed away 3 June 1879.

Family History Notes
