Biography

John DeVaughn was born 1720 to 1730 to Thomas DeVaughn Sr. and a brother of Thomas DeVaughn Jr, Thomas was a cavalry officer in the Revolutionary War and John served in the Army. The source for John DeVaughn is the 1782 Fairfax Tax List has John the owner of 3 horses & 6 cows with no slaves.

Samuel DeVaughn of Mississippi and South Carolina being born the son of Thomas Sr. no evidence exists and families give the birth place in SC. Descendants of Samuel were educated politicians, soldiers and wealthy land owners with slaves, while the Fairfax Co. Virginia ones were poor farmers.

The Vaughn name is a very common name in France and England, both SC & VA families spell the name DeVaughn without exception. One family tree claims a James DeVaughn of Licking County, Ohio but the spelling doesn't use the De.

John DeVaughn left a widow Elizabeth DeVaughn so this couple are possible parents of Nancy Pool wife of Richard, the DeVaughn & Pool's were neighbors. The 1800 Virginia Census have Jonathan, Thomas and William living in Fairfax Co, Virginia.

William DeVaughn of Walker Wood County, West Virginia was born 1790 to 1793 died 1882 married Mary Grimsley were the parents of 11 children, 4 sons and 7 daughters. The father of William may be a Alexander DeVaughn of Kanawha County, VA or a William Alexander of Fairfax is the same 1800 William DeVaughn of Fairfax Co. VA.
