Hugh Primrose Dean was also known as Hugh Primrose Deane. He was also known as Hew Primrose Deane.[1] He was born circa 1725 in Cork.[2]
Hugh Primrose Dean married Eleanor Gamble in Christ Church on Sunday 27 December 1761 in Cork.[3] Hugh lived circa 1765 in London.[4] He was a landscape painter, called 'the Irish Claude' and 'a devoted imitator of Gaspard Poussin.[5][6]' He exibited with the Society of Arts and secured the patronage of Henry, second Viscount Palmerston. He spent much of his working life in Italy around Rome and Naples.[7] By circa 1780, through his misconduct, he had lost the favour of his patron, Lord Palmerston, and had made but little way as a painter in London.[8] He was a Methodist preacher circa 1782.[9]
