Biography

Scottish flag
Alex Deese was born in Scotland.

Alex was born either on the 22nd of June 1851 or the 24th of June 1850 in Scotland. [1] [2] The 1880 Census listed him as "Elexander", his birth date as 1856, and his occupation as "working on a farm". He was married and they had their first child, Flonnie. [3] On the 1900 Census his name was "Alexander E", born in 1857, and they had 7 more children. His occupation was a "farmer", and he was renting a farm. [4] On the 1910 Census he was then renting a house, under the name "Alexander", and was born in 1850. [5] The 1920 Census likewise listed him as a farmer in the "general farming" industry, his name as "E Alexander", and his birth in 1851. [6] And the 1930 Census placed him in a rented home, not on a farm, and put his name as "L.A.". [7]

Marriage

Susanna Ann (Leach) Deese (1861-1947)[3][4][2]

Death

He passed away in 1933. View Obituary [8] There are two cemeteries each with a Headstone for Alex. [9][10][11] This is explained in the family LORE related in the "Memoirs of Gramflakes" book. [2] Note the difference in birthdates (22 Jun 1850 vs. 24 Jun 1851). There are images of Alex and Susie in the book. Also, the author makes references to Scott-Gaelic family Bibles owned by both Alex and Susie, and at that time they were in the possession of family members. [2]

Research Notes

No record has been found on the 1870 or 1890 Census at this time. There are inconsistencies on all the Census records about his birth dates, name spellings, and place of birth, as well as his parents' places of birth. Deese-313 21:20, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Family Lore from firsthand information is that Alex was born in Scotland. [2] His father and father's family for 4 more generations of ancestors were born in the USA, Emmanuel being the immigrant and progenitor. There is a gap of information about Alex and his father Aaron which could perhaps indicate that Aaron returned to Scotland, married (nothing is really known of his wife and Alex's mother), and after Alex was born, they moved to the United States, appearing again on the 1860 Census when Alex was about 9 years old.
