REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE

Served as a corporal in the American Revolutionary War in Conrad Shirman's Company, Sixth Battalion, Berks County Militia in 1780. [1]

"Once more, in 1780, the movements of the British in New York caused great alarm, and, in anticipation of their being directed against Philadelphia itself, 4,000 militia from Pennsylvania were ordered out, to co-operate with Washington and the main army. Of this number the quota for Berks County was 600 men and comprised the Sixth Battalion, under command of Colonel Hiester. Their service lasted from August 10th to September 9th, but was fortunately unattended by active hostilities. " From a biography of Colonel Heister [2]

"Hiester's battalion with Reed's army. On July 28, 1780, Col. Morgan was directed to call out immediately three classes of the county militia, provided they numbered 600 men, exclusive of officers, and, if not, then to call out also the fourth class. This was the quota of the county towards supplying 4000 militia from Pennsylvania which Gen'l Washington required in order to co-operate with the main army, in anticipation of the movements of the British Army again to Philadelphia.

The Battle of Camden was fought on August 15, 1780, and the British were victorious. Col. Morgan forwarded the men that were ordered, and the greater part comprised the Hiester Battalion, the 6th of the county militia. It may have been under General Joseph Reed, in New Jersey. It is known to have been in service for thirty days from August 10th to September 9th, but the particular duty performed I could not ascertain." John DISINGER moved to Fayette Township, Seneca Co., New York about 1804 when he was about age 23. John was drafted for the War of 1812 but sent a substitute in his place. He would marry Elizabeth ERNSBERGER shortly after she immigrated to America at age 21. John and Elizabeth had six children only two of whom were still alive when the biography was written. They were Samuel and Daniel. John was the son of Nicholas DISINGER and his father would later follow him to Seneca Co., New York. John would live to age 87 and his wife to age 79. When John died he left 500 acres to his six children. John was a member and Elder of the German Reformed Church. [Note: John and Thomas DISINGER moved to Fayette before the 1810 census and John may have had a younger brother or brother-in-law with him].

"An important element in population in the early settlement of Fayette, and which still to a marked degree exercises great influence in the direction of its affairs, were the Pennsylvania German settlers of the town, the ancestors of whom came to this country from Germany and Switzerland, prior to the Revolutionary War, or just at its close, including some persons of Hugenot ancestry. Most of these settlers came to Fayette in the first quarter of this century, although there were some who settled later, and the greater number came from Northumberland, Lancaster, Cumberland, Dauaphin, Northampton, Bucks, Berks and Lehigh Counties in Pennsylvania. Samuel Bear, Martin Kendig, Jr., and the Yost brothers, already mentioned, were of Pennsylvania German ancestry."

William (Wilhelm) DISINGER who served in the Revolutionary War and married Elizabeth. His will filed at Tulpehocken, Berks Co., PA Nov. 17, 1823 mentions his brothers Nicholas DISINGER and John DISINGER. The Seneca Co., NY history mentions that he served during the Revolutionary War but did not return and was presumed to have died during the War.

John (Johan George?) DISINGER born 1757, served in the Revolutionary War and died after 1823. The Seneca Co., NY History mentions that he did not return after the war and was presumed to have died. He is mentioned in his brother, William’s will which indicates this is not true for either of them.

“Daniel DISINGER was born October 9, 1823 in the town of Fayette, Seneca Co., NY. His parents were John and Elizabeth DISINGER. He married Oct 17, 1844 to Miss Catherine ESHENOUR. They had one son William, born May 26, 1846. Catherine died Feb. 28, 1850 aged 26 years [b. 1824]. She was buried in the Canoga Cemetery, Town of Fayette, Seneca Co., New York in Section 4, Lot 141. He then married Christiana SCHROYER on July 3, 1851. They then had three children, Peter E., John E. and Sidney F.

John and Elizabeth DISINGER were born in Pennsylvania and came to Seneca County in 1804 when John was about 23 years of age and before their marriage. Elizabeth came to this country when 21 years old and soon after, was married to John. They had six children and when John died at age 87, he left them a total of 500 acres. By 1895 when this biography was written, only two of the children were still living, Samuel and Daniel. John DISINGER was drafted in to the War of 1812, but considered it his duty to remain at home and hired a substitute.

Daniel’s grandfather Nicholas DISINGER came to Seneca County about six years* after his son John came, purchasing 20 acres of land and here passed the remainder of his days. He lived to be 84 years of age, while his good wife reached the age of 88. He served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, as did also two of his brothers, William and John. They never returned, however, and the natural supposition is that they were killed in battle, but there is no certainty on this point

[Note: Nicholas moved to Seneca Co., New York after the 1810 census where he was living in Toboyne Twp., Cumberland (now Perry) Co., Pennsylvania. If he left Toboyne Twp. After the census of 1810, then the time stated could be correct.] .[16]

“Nicholas DEISSINGER died on June 18, 1841 at Fayette, Seneca County, NY. He is buried in the Cemetery by the Dutch Reformed Church. A tombstone inscribed “Nicholas DISINGER 1776” on his plot was apparently placed there several years later and the date obviously refers to the service in the Revolutionary War.” [Note: I recently visited this cemetery which is located behind a Baptist Church. Both Nicholas and his wife are buried there and I have photos of the graves stones.] 1. FINDAGRAVE biography for Nicholas DEISSINGER Memorial Number 28478678

Nicolaus was spoken of as a "smith" and was a small taxpayer in Tulpehocken in 1780 and 1781. He did not own any land at that time, but in 1781 he had 1 cow. His name disappears from the tax rolls in 1785. Based on birth records of his children, he left Tulpehocken after 1783 and moved to Cumberland County and then to Franklin County (now part of Cumberland). About 1792 or 1793, they moved to Perry area of Cumberland County where he owned 2 adjacent farms in the Sherman Valley. After the War of 1812, Nicolaus and his son George sold their farms and moved to Seneca County, NY. They farmed in NY. Earlier, sons John and Thomas had already moved to Seneca County.

Nicolaus was a corporal in Captain Conrad Shirman's Co, 6th Battalion, Berks County Militia (Joseph Hiester, Colonel). In 1780, the company was called into active duty against the Indians for 2 months (Aug 10 to Sep 9).

Nicolaus's grave marker was damaged and replaced with a marker with his name misspelled as Nicholas Disinger 1776. This is believed to commerate his service in the American Revolution.

An affidavit is included from the Clerk of the Surrogate’s Court of the County of Seneca, in the State of New York that this a true copy of the will on file in Book B of Wills, page 159. Further information provided: Nicholas DEYSINGER A/K/A Nicholas DEISINGER late of the town of Fayette, Seneca Co., NY. Deceased. Date of Death June 18, 1841; Date of Probate Oct. 25, 1841.

• [Note: this will was written on June 8, 1830 and the Census for 1830 was supposed to cover information as of June 1st, 1830. It would appear that since David DISINGER is to care for his sister Catherine OVERHOUSE of the town of Fayette, then he must be somewhere nearby. In fact, he lives in the adjacent township of Varick, just to the south of Fayette Township. With the map of Varick township below it is possible to locate the location of David DISINGER in 1830 by comparing the neighbors on the 1830 census to the owners on the 1865 (approximately) map of Varick as follows: J. Brown, David’s next door neighbor, is found in section 69; Daniel Yost, also a next door neighbor, is in Section 68 where a Jno DISSINGER is also found on the map on Cayuga Lake and he may be a son of David; finally W. Williams, located 4 names away from David, is found in Section 69, or more correctly, probable sons V. Williams and E. Williams. Moving to the north by several sections, there is a D. DISINGER in Section 51, also along Cayuga Lake in Fayette Township. The Fayette P.O. is located very close to the border of Fayette and Varick townships.] [18]

Eva Catharine Weisner DEISSINGER died Dec. 5, 1844 (aged 87-88) and is buried next to her husband Johan Nicholas DEISSINGER in the Christ Reformed Church Cemetery, Fayette Twp., Seneca Co., NY. Her FindAGrave Memorial Number is 28153956.Eve
