Jackson was born about 1857 in the Oregon Territory. He is the son of Rachel Belden, an enslaved woman, and probably Daniel Delaney, her enslaver.[1]
In the 1860 census Jackson Delany (age 3) was in Sublimity, Marion, Oregon, with mother Rachel Delany (age 26), and the owner of his mother, D. Delany Sr (age 67), farmer, and his wife E. Delany (age 67). Daniel Delany owned real estate worth $3800 and personal estate worth $813.[2]
His mother was freed during the Civil War, and married Nathan Brooks in 1863.
In the 1870 census Jack Delaney (age 13) was in Aumsville, Marion, Oregon, with stepfather Nathan Brooks (age 90), mother Rachel Brooks (age 42), and step brothers: Saml (age 4) and Mansfield (age 2) Brooks.[3]
In the 1880 census Jackson Delany (age 23), farm laborer, was the single son of Rachel Brooks (age 50) in Eola, Polk, Oregon, with brothers Samuel Brooks (age 16, farm laborer) and Mansfield Brooks (age 12).[4]
