Biography

Born to Daniel and Margaret "Peggy" Couch-DELPH in Elk Creek, Grayson County, Virginia. THE census records give her place of birth as Tennessee, but most believe it was Virginia.

Family Life

1850 Hawkins county, Hawkins, Tennessee
Age 74
Race White
Birth Year (Estimated) 1776
Birthplace North Carolina
House Number 44
Daniel Delph M 74 North Carolina
Margaret Delph F 22 North Carolina
Margaret Delph F 22 Tennessee
Mary Delph F 21 Tennessee
Eliza Delph F 18 Tennessee
Jane Delph F 16 Tennessee
Jackson Delph M 14 Tennessee
Wilson Delph M 12 Tennessee
This looks like the Margaret, Mary, Eliza, Jane, Jackson (Andrew), Wilson would be their CHILDREN, but Daniel/Margaret are known to take in their siblings children also. [1]
1860 Dist #3 Hawkins, Tennessee
Daniel Delph age 84 Farmer VA --(s/b NC)
Margaret Delph age: 64 N.Carolina (1796)
Mary Delph age 30 domestic TENN.
Martha Delph age: 26
Eliza Delph age 27
Malissa Delph age 24
George Delph age 14 Tenn
Andrew, age: 5 TENN
Aanderson Delph AGE 22 F.L. Tenn
NOTE The 1850 census has Daniel/Margaret both born N.C and the kids names match. So I feel this IS the correct Daniel/ Margaret. The 4 girls are still :unmarried..the ages match the kids dates of birth that we have.
MARTHA on the census probably the JANE on the 1850?
And here is Malissa that was not listed on the 1850???
and GEORGE born 1846... that would be #12 OR maybe he is a grandson? Turns out I believe he is, Jacob/Mary's son. and there is an Andrew J. (Jackson) maybe he is a grandson? there is one on the 1850, but 5 years old??? on the 1850 census he is 14 years old so here he should be 24 not 5...
and who is the ANDERSON DELPH age 22? maybe he is a grandson?

We can narrow down the family move to Indiana as being after Sept. 1860 when Daniel died in Hawkins, Tennessee & before 1864 when Andrew J DELPH/ Margaret (Margaret born in Indiana) first child, Esther was born in Indiana, as per 1870 census. Also A.J. Jr was born Tennessee and his dad joined the WAR in Tennessee in 1862 and out in 1863. And A.J. Newberry, Margaret's husband died in Indiana 1866. Margaret is buried there in Adams Township, Madison County. f-a-g Memorial # 16023426. Margratia SLAUGHTER married Andrew J. Delph, she was B: 1836 D: 1875 Indiana & is buried next to her mother-in-law Margaret Couch-Delph/ Stephen Delph.. memorial #16023009. (they had another son after the 1870 census, William R. b: 1872)

1870 Adams, Madison, Indiana
Delph,, Andrew J. age 34 Farmer TENN
Delph, Margaret (wife?) age 31 keeping house Indiana
Esther A age 7 at home Ind.
Lurah A. age 4 Ind.
Ralph age 3/12 Ind
Newberry, A.J Male age 15 farm laborer TENN
NEXT LINE and next door is:
Delph, MARGARET age:74 Keep house blind W.VA. (year of birth 1796)
Delph, MARY age: 40 at home W.VA (?)
Newberry, M. Female age 46 at home W.VA(?)
(I think the state born on these people is wrong should be N.C for Margaret the age is right 1796 & Mary never got married, her age is right, 1830 TENN
"Newberry M. Female age: 46"
GOSH! "Newberry, Margaret married A.J Newberry 1830" age is not quite right s/b 1828, living with Andrew J is "Newberry, A.J. age 15". MUST be JR. Margaret's son by A.J., so he was born in Tenn in 1855..and they made the move with Mom/brother.

WARNING In Daniel's Will he states, "all my estate to go to my youngest son, Andrew J Delph, son of Margaret."
So IF that is true then either the last 2 kids, Wilson born 1838 and Malissa born 1836 have already passed away or they are someone else's kids... The 1850/1860 census DOES NOT state relationship.
