Birth and Childhood
Ina and her twin sister Illa were the second and third children of Charley Dement and Mary Annie [Cameron] Dement. They were born on July 15, 1902 in Mount Pleasant, TX.
When Ina and Illa were 3 or 4 years old, the family moved to Jackson County, OK for several years, then spent at least one year in Dodridge, AS.
Marriage to Nick Carter
On March 11, 1921 Ina married Nick Carter in Miller, Arkansas. She was 18 years old. [1]
Separated from husband?
In the 1930 census, Ina and her two young children Clara and Jess are living with her parents in Dickens, TX. She's 27 years old and reported herself as "widowed" on the census.
However, Nick Carter's death certificate shows he died in 1974, his status was "married" at that time, and Ina signed as the informant, so we can assume they reconciled at some point.[2]
2nd marriage - Ruben Jenkins
In the 1940 census, however, Ina is married to Ruben M Jenkins and they live in Fort Worth, TX. Ina and Nick's daughters Clara and Jess Carter are living with Ina and Ruben too. [3]
Passing and Burial
Ina passed on December 4, 1979 in Forth Worth, TX at the age of 77. She is buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth, TX alongside Nick Carter. [4][5]
Notes
I'm contuing to research Ina's mysterious life. She was my great-grandaunt, and I'd never heard any intriguing stories about her from my grandmother, so the idea of her separating from her husband, claiming to be a widow, and remarrying is suprising. But I've read that this was not uncommon for women especially to say they are widows, in order to avoid the stigma of being divorced or separated.Long-21899
