Biography

Joseph Edmond was born in St-Hermas on 8 June 1866. He was the son of Jean Baptiste Demers and Elmire Gauthier. He was baptized the 10th. His godparents were Joseph Legault Deslaurier and Philomène Demers.^[1]

He grew-up in St-Hermas^[2] and Buckingham^[3] before joining his brothers in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

There, on 1 August 1891, Edward Demers, son of Baptize[sic] and Mary Gautius[sic] married Celia Branchaud, daughter of Frank Branchaud and Celia St-Louis. The witnesses were Theodore Demers (maybe Edward's brother) and Zena Branchaud (maybe Jennie, wife of Theodore and cousin of Celia).^[4]

In 1905, Edward and Celia are now living in Ashland, Wisconsin. He is the hotel keeper and has 26 boarders (one of which an unrelated Joseph Demars). His father John (Jean Baptiste) and his brother Oliva (sic:Olivier) are living with them.^[5]

They did not have a big family. According to 1910 census (Duluth Ward 6, Saint Louis, Minnesota), out of 3 born children, they only have one living daughter : VIvian W. (3 months old).^[6]

Edward Demars passed away in Minnesota on 9 April 1912.^[7] He is buried in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Eau Claire, Wisconsin^[8].

Mr. Edward DeMars, proprietor of O.K. Hotel at Duluth, died Tuesday night at ten o'clock at St. Mary's Hospital in that city. He was operated upon at the hospital last Saturday. He leaves surviving him, a wife and child in Duluth and a brother, Joseph, residing on Water St., this city. The body will be brought to Eau Claire today and the funeral will take place from residence of Joseph DeMars, 602 Water St.

Research notes

Here the marriage record is a key that links the DeMars family from Eau Claire to the Demers from St-Hermas, Québec. Unfortunately that source is not a primary source. Being a handwritten index of diverse handwritten registries, it is very unreliable.
The original church record would have much less error.

His obit allows to connect his brothers Joseph.

According to Ashland City Directory of 1905, Edward's O K Hotel and Saloon in at 519 E 2nd. in that city.^[10]
