• MRS GRACE DEMPSTER BAIN The death took place at the residence of her daughter Mrs Wm Smith of Mrs Grace Bain, relict of the late Mr Geo. Bain. The late Mrs Bain was born in Scotland in Ayrshire, March 18th 1846, and had she lived till Friday, she would have been 86 years old. Mrs Bain came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Viola, in 1866, The late Mr Bain fought in the Maori wars at the Waikato. After that period the late Mr and Mrs Bain settled in Dunedin, where Mr Bain was engaged in tunnelling. They travelled over many districts in the South Island. The family then travelled to Denniston, settling there in 1894; after a period they moved to Seddonville where Mrs Bain has resided ever since. Mr Bain predeceased his wife 19 years ago. Mrs Bain was a very learned woman and could converse on many subjects. She was an excellent nurse and the people of Seddonville had to rely on Mrs Bain for all their nursing. She was a very hard worker and attended all her patients unceasingly. She was the maternity nurse for Seddonville for many years and it was Granny's proud boast to number her babies. Mrs Bain was known to all throughout the district as "Granny," and all came to Granny for comfort and advice and were very seldom disappointed. Mrs Bain had 9 sons and 5 daughters and at the present time there are still living, 6 sons and 4 daughters. There are 34 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Mrs Bain was bed-ridden for the past ten weeks, but was keen and alert right up to the end. The late Mrs Bain was an earnest Presbyterian and attended her religious duties until quite recently. The old lady will be sadly missed and the sympathy of all the community goes out to the bereaved relatives.
