Biography

Edward R. DENNIS, was born at Georgia 1827 and died at Newton County, Mississippi 25 Jan 1868. He was married at Russell County, Alabama 2 Dec 1852, Sarah Lucinda WRIGHT, who was born at Chambers County, Alabama 12 Apr 1827 and died at Rawls Springs, Mississippi, 21 Aug 1892, daughter of William and Lucinda (Robinson) Wright.

Edward R. Dennis was born in Georgia but moved westward with his brother Daniel Asa Dennis in the early 1850s to Alabama where he was married. The two then made their way to Newton County, Mississippi in circa 1858. They settled on a plantation about midway between Hickory station and Garlandsville in Jasper County. They worked together. Industrious, honorable and attentive to business, they made themselves a good name among their neighbors. Edward served in the War of Northern Aggression as a Sgt. and later Pvt. with Co. I (Stephen’s Guards) 36th Mississippi Volunteer Infantry Regiment. According to his military records, he was not reappointed to Sgt. on 11 May 1862 for reasons that cannot be concluded. He would go on to fight in many battles in the western theater, most notably Corinth, Port Hudson, and Vicksburg where he fought from atop Stockade Redan repulsing the final Yankee assaults that forced them into a siege. He was surrendered on 4 July 1863 and paroled on the 7th. Returning to his regiment months later, he remained with them for the remainder of the war. He was present at the Battle of Fort Blakely near Mobile, Alabama and soon was surrendered at Magee Farm in Citronelle, Alabama 29 Apr 1865 with the last remaining Confederate forces east of the Mississippi River. He was murdered along with his brother, Daniel Asa Dennis, 25 Jan 1868 by a group of freedmen that had unlawfully stolen a pig from the Dennis Plantation.
