William was born in 1840 in Foggathorpe, Yorkshire, England,[1] where he lived with his parents, John Dennes and Elizabeth Rispin, in 1841.[2]
His father died in 1850 at the age of 33.[3] By 1851 William lived with his mother in Hull, Yorkshire.[4]
