Nelson Henry Derthick was born on 25 December 1812 at Richfield Springs, New York, USA. As of 25 December 1812, he was also known as Nathan.[1][2][3] He began military service on 1 May 1833 at Canandaigua, Ontario Co., New York. He is listed as a veteran]] of the Black Hawk War, at a Boone Co. Illinois, genealogy site. That war was fought in 1832, so he may have actually joined the military earlier.[4][5]
He married Margaret Travis on 5 August 1837 at Henry County, Iowa [6] or 16 March 1838.[2]
He was a miller when he and Margaret appeared on the census of 18 December 1850 at Belvidere, Boone Co., Illinois.[7] He was a laborer when he and Margaret appeared on the census of 27 July 1860 at Belvidere, Boone Co., Illinois.[8] He and Margaret lived circa 1878 at Kiddville, Sullivan Co., Missouri.[2] He appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 at Belvidere, Boone Co., Illinois. His name was was also spelled as Dethick.[9]
Nelson Derthick died on 19 April 1882 at Illinois, at age 69 and was buried at Belvidere Cemetery, Belvidere, Boone Co., Illinois. His memorial states that he was a veteran of the Black Hawk War.[10]
