Biography

William Devenish Meares was born in about 1823 in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Matthew Devenish Meares and Georgina Augusta (Augusta) Devenish and the brother of Elizabeth (Devenish-Meares) Ellis, Henry Douglas (Meares) Devenish-Meares, John Devenish Meares, Alfred Devenish Meares, Catherine Ann (Meares) Ellis and Augusta Anne Devenish. (Meares) Osborne.

William was about 2 years when he arrived on 10 July 1825 at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia with his parents and baby sister, who had been aboard the ship the convict ship the Mariner in 1825 [1]. The ship had departed from Cork, Ireland on 2 March 1825 and arrived in New South Wales, Australia on 10 July 1825.

He married Jane Osborne on 14 July 1846 in the St Michael Church Of England Schoolhouse, Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia and their children were William Devenish Meares (1847-1923), Mary Devenish (Meares) (1848-1905), Matthew C Devenish Meares (1850-1924), Fanny A Devenish (Meares) Stacey) (1852-1934), Florence J Devenish (Meares) Davy (1854-1925), Archibald Devenish Meares (1857-1929), Henry O. Devenish Meares (1860-1939) and Edith L. Devenish Meares (1862-1939).

William died on 12 July 1903 when aged 80 years, in Kilmore, New South Wales, Australia [2][3][4] and he was buried in the Gore Hill Cemetery, St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia [5].

Death of Mr. William Devenish: News was received this morning of the death of Mr. William Devenish Meares, father of Mr. C. D. Meares and Mrs. B. Stacy. The deceased, who for many years was police magistrate at Mudgee, had reached the ripe age of 82, and is also survived by three daughters and two sons, beyond the two members of the family just mentioned. Of the two last named Mr. H. O. D. Meares is a barrister practising in New Zealand, and Mr. W. D. Meares occupies a high position in insurance circles in the same colony. PERSONAL: Mr William Devenish Meares, a very old colonist and Civil servant, died at his residence, Kilmore, North Sydney, on Sunday night, aged 80 years. Mr Meares, who was a son of the late Rev. M. D. Meares, was born in Ireland, but arrived in New South Wales when only about 4 years of age, and had lived here ever since. He was one of the earliest scholars of the King's school, having entered there in the year 1832 under Dr Forrest. In 1852 he joined the Civil Service, retiring on a pension in 1889. For a time he acted as stipendiary magistrate in Sydney. He is survived by his widow and four sons and four daughters. The funeral took place at Gore Hill Cemetery on Monday afternoon.
