Name

Johan(nes) Heinrich Dietz was this person's original name in Germany, and in the German Lutheran Church records in New York. The Dutch Reformed Church officials wrote his name as Johan Hendrick Dietz or Henrik Dietz. His corresponding Dutch surname is Diets, and sometimes he was recorded as such by the New York Dutch. In some records the variant Tiets was used; later colonial British and U.S. records anglicised his name to John Henry Teats. Teats is the English phonetical rendition of Tiets.
The surname Dietz is a dialectal variant of the word Deutsch, meaning German, but oiginally meaning folkish, of - or, belonging to - our own people.
In the eighteenth century it was a convention amongst many German families that all boy children be baptised with the first name Johannes or Johan (the equivalent of the English John). But only the eldest was actually ever called Johan(nes); the younger sons were called by their second baptismal name. Thus, this person was usually known as Heinrich Dietz, rather than Johan Heinrich Dietz. The German name Heinrich is equivalent to the Dutch name Hendrik and the English name Henry. - Albertus

Note: Several Family Search Genealogies (formerly called Ancestral Files) attest to his name - Henrick Dietz, anglicised as Henry Teats - the date and place of his birth, and three marriages, albeit with inconsistencies. Also, the baptismal records of his children (q.v.) at St. Peters Lutheran Church of Rhinebeck (Reynbeek) furnish their fathers name - Heinrich Dietz - and that of their mother - Anna [Muller]. William, indeed, there is no primary or secondary source to show that Johannes Pieter Dietz and Maria were the parents of my Joannes Heinrich Dietz: so i have disconnected them as parents and child. My Johannes Heinrich Dietz and his wife Anna were both born in Germany according to this reliable source, the marriage record of the Dutch church at Poughkeepsie: 1758, Feb 21 with Certificate. Johan Henrik Dietz & Anna Muller Y: D: both born in Germany and living here. No parents named.
Can you please delete your Johannes Heinrich Dietz from the parents, Johannes & Maria Dietz? The record I have says that Johannes Peter Dietz didn't come to New York until 1730 which means his oldest children were born in Germany. Apparently your Dietz Family may have therefore been with the Palatine Migration of 1709-1710. It would be worth the trouble to check in to this. I was sure my Dietz Ancestor was in this group but apparently not. Just too much guess work here and no original sources to consult.

The Dietz Family of Schoharie, New York compiled by Mrs. Eva (Dietz) Young (pub. 1967) (she was born on March 10, 1906) does not recognize this Johannes Hendrick Dietz as the same man who was the son of Johannes Pieter Dietz & Maria Engelta Weiner. It seems that there is a mixup of two men with the same name. I have the Will of the Schoharie County, N. Y. John Hendrick Dietz (1722-1784+) which names his children but they don't match the Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, N.Y. man of the same name. Therefore we must conclude that we are talking about two different men here. I better make a profile page for my Johannes Henrick Dietz of Schoharie so they can be compared.
