Biography

Birth

John Digby (or Dygby), Knt., was the third son of Everard Digby, Esq., and Jacquet Ellis (or Elles).[1][2][3]

Lands and Offices

He held lands in South Luffenham, Rutland, and in right of his first wife, in Eye Kettleby, Leicestershire.[1][2]
Sir John Digby was knighted by Henry VII in 1485 for his service in Bosworth Field.[1][2] He also served as follows:
  • Sheriff of Rutland, 1490-91, 1501-02, 1517-18, 1523-24.[1][2]
  • Captain of Calais in 1513.[1][2]
  • Sheriff of Warwickshire and Leicestershire, 1514-5.[1][2]
  • Engaged in Low Country wars of 1511.[1]
  • Marshal of the vanguard of the king's army at the Battle of Therouanne in 1513.[1]

Marriages

Sir John Digby married first after January 1476 to Katherine Griffin, daughter of Nicholas Griffin, Esq.,[3] and Katherine Curzon. Katherine was the widow of John Bellars, Esq.[1][2]
John and Katherine had eight children together, four sons and four daughters:
John Digby married secondly to Sanche Willoughby, the daughter of Robert Willoughby[3] and Margaret Griffith by settlement dated 24 October 1517. Sanche was the widow of John Strelley, Esq.[1][2] by whom she had two sons and four daughters.[4][5] John and Sanche had no issue.[4][5]

Death

John died between 19 May 1533 and 31 May 1533 at Eye Kettleby, Leicestershire, England.[6] He was buried at Melton-Mowbray, Leicestershire. He left a will dated 1 August 1529. He wrote a codicil on 19 May 1533. His estate was probated on 30 October 1546[1][2]

Burton's Leicestershire, p.375 describes the MI at Melton, which mentions Dame Katherine and Dame Anne, his wives.
