William Dix was born in about 1827 at Leafield in Oxfordshire. He was baptised at Leafield chapel on 18 March 1827, as the son of Job and Sarah Dix, of Leafield. His father was a farmer. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1851 William Dix was living at Leafield with his parents, Job and Sarah, and their other children. His age was given as 24, implying a birth date in 1826 or 1827. His birthplace was given as Leafield, Oxfordshire. ^[2]
