Biography

George Wynne Dixon was born about 1817 in Kentucky, the son of Henry Dixon and Mary Johnston.

In 1860 he was 43 years old and living in District 14, Shelby County, Tennessee, with Maria Dixon (age 35), Hart Dixon (age 18). The household also included J E R Ray (age 35, lawyer, farmer, Secretary of State) and his family. George was working as a judge of the Common Law Court in Memphis. He owned real estate valued at $20,000 and personal estate valued at $12,000.[1]

In 1870 he was 52 years old and living in Memphis, Shelby County, with a large household. He was working as an attorney and owned real estate valued at $100,000 and personal estate valued at $25,000.[2]

In 1880 he was boarding with Frank and Sarah W Williams at 60 Monroe Avenue in Memphis.[3]

George Dixon died in December 1883 while on a business trip to Pennsylvania and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis on 19 December 1883.[4][5]

Slaves

  • In 1860, George was enslaving 12 people ranging in age from four to 50 years old in Shelby County, Tennessee.[6]
