Richard Doby was born in North Carolina.

Richard Morris Doby was born on 25 Aug 1931 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina to Claude Albert Doby and Carrie Thelma Austin. [1] [2] [3] [4]

On the 1940 Census he was 8 years old and lived with his parents and siblings in in Harris, Stanly County, North Carolina. He had completed 2nd grade. [5]

He enlisted in the United States Army on 1 Sep 1948. [4]

He was married to Geraldine Barnhardt (1934-1994) on 4 Jun 1952 in Rowan County, North Carolina. [6] [7]

In 1958 he was livinig with his wife at 19 Court Avenue in Columbus, Georgia. His occupation was "United States Army". [8]

He was discharged from the United States Army on 1 Apr 1969.[4] According to his grave stone he received the Silver Star and Bronze Star Medal.[9]

On 9 Dec 1971, while working in a factory, a steel beam slid off a pile and crushed him. He died within minutes. [10][4] He was buried at Rowan Memorial Park Cemetery in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. [9]

  • Note by Allan Capps on 25 May 2023: His grave stone lists his death date as 12 Apr 1971, however, his death certificate lists the death date as 9 Dec 1971 and was signed by the medican examiner on 10 Dec 1971.
