Hiller, owned a stone quarry in Davenport, Iowa.  He had many hores and many men worked forhim.  He contracted with the City of Davneport to lay te cobble stone pavement in Davenport and signed an agreement to pay a certain sum if the work was not finished on a certain date.  Then an epidemic broke out among horses and all (maybe most) of his horses died.  It was therefore a physical impossibility for him to complete the pave;ment by the set date, so he paid the city, which he probably was not bound to do since the loss of the horses was an "act of God" but he was a conscientiously hones person.

  He was a member of a Lutheran church, not Missouri Synod.  Ther arose a dissebsion among the members, some claiming that the pastor and congrgation held error in some teaching.  Grandpa could not see the error and he remained with the congregation while a group left the church and joined the Missouri Synod church.  Later on, some pastors were quartered in his home during a conference, and when they had explained the doctrine in question to him, he saw the point and then joined the Missouri Synod church.  (Or maybe it was that the church went over to Missouri Synod and he left with those who left the church because they did not see that they were wrong...and that then Grandpa went back to the church when he saw the error.)

  He sent my father (Albert T. Hiller) to the Missouri Synod teachers' college and paid for his education, although he had lost most of his money because of the epidemic.  But he still owned a large double house, where my father grew up.

  Aunt Margaret was 6 years old when Grandpa and Grandma came over from Germany.  My fther was the youngest of sixteen children.
