Bankruptcy Court
A TERRIBLE LOSS
"Monday, before the Registrar (Mr A Henry), the case of Rosannah Catherine Albrecht was heard. Bankrupt, sworn and examined by the official assignee, stated she resided at Mount Druitt, near Penrith, and her estate was sequestrated on July 11. She was a married woman, and her husband's name was Albert Albrecht. She had a general store at Gore Hill. Her bankruptcy was caused by a fire which destroyed the store and everything in it. The property wag insured in the Victoria Fire Insurance Company—the house for £500, furniture, jewellery and clothing £400, and stock £100. The fire took place between 8 and 9 p.m. on October 4 last. There was an inquiry into the cause of the fire, at which there was an open finding. Her solicitor applied for the insurance money, but he got none. The insurance company rebuilt the house which had been mortgaged to the bank, but they gave no reason for refusing to pay the money. They would not acknowledge the debt but promised to give her a few pounds as a present, which she refused to take. She was sure the place was set on fire, but could not say by whom. It was set on fire in five different places. She had £675 in a wooden box. in a chest of drawers in her daughter's room. The money, was all in gold. The nearest bank was about a mile from the place. The money was stolen. Her daughter and her husband knew of the money being in the box. Both the jewellery and the money were taken, and the clothes were smouldering when she went in with the firemen. The drawer which contained the money was not burnt. She kept books which were all destroyed in the fire. She never had a bank account. She had about £178 owing to her at the time of the fire. Three of witness's daughters slept in the room where the money was kept in the drawers. Accounts not having been filed, the matter was, on the application of the official assignee, adjourned to August 18."[4]
