Jane (Dorn) Slocombe was born in Berkshire, England.
Jane (Dorn) Slocombe was an Assisted Immigrant to Victoria.
Jane Dorn, married name Slocombe was born about 1827 in Abingdon, Berkshire, England.
Marriage. In 1847, in Berkshire, England, Jane Dorn married Robert Surridge Slocombe, their marriage registered in the Abington district during the April - June quarter of that year. [1]
Jane and Robert registered just the one child in Berkshire, England. A son was born in Gloucestershire in 1850. [2]
1851 census. Jane's husband Robert didn't spend census night in Abingdon, Berkshire, with the family. Jane 'Slocomb' was head of the household and listed as a Smockfrockmaker, married, aged 24, born Abingdon. The children were aged 3 and 1¼.

Emigration to Australia. Their daughter Laura recalled, just days away from her 105th birthday, that the Slocombe family arrived in the Colony of Victoria at Christmas 1852. Her memory served her correctly. [4]
Robert and Jane Slocombe, along with children Laura and William, arrived per the Ann Thompson as Assisted Immigrants, departing Liverpool 1st September 1852, and arriving at Geelong, Colony of Victoria, on 27th December 1852.[5]
The nominal list of passengers gives their native county as Gloucester. Robert was a 29-year-old Carpenter and they belonged to the Church of England faith. Robert and Jane, aged 26, could read and write but, of course, the children aged just 4 and 2, could not. The disposal part of the passenger list shows that George left on his own account, his address being Geelong, Victoria. There would have been plenty of building work to be done in the Colony. [6]
Infant Ann died on the voyage, September 16th.
Sadly, little William John also died before they left Geelong, aged just three. [7]
It was only in mid-1853 that the requirement to register births and deaths began in the Colony. From 1854, the births of eight children were registered: one in Chilwell, one Ballarat, and then the other six in Clunes.
Widowed. In 1890, Robert drowned in the Snowy River, near Buchan, Victoria.

FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE BUSH.
Some few weeks ago a man named Robert Slocombe, whose sons, G. Slocombe and T. Slocombe, hold land near Buchan, decided to visit his sons at this place with the intention of inspecting some land. He arrived at Buchan on the 27th February, and set out to walk to Snowy River, a distance of about 13 miles. He broke his journey at Murrindale, and started from there on February 28. This was the last time he was seen alive. On Sunday, March 2, the two brothers set out for Buchan expecting to meet their father, but not finding him there, and knowing he had not arrived at Snowy River, they became alarmed and organised a search party of some 40 men on horseback. The party searched the whole of the basin country, but it was not until last Thursday that the whereabouts of the missing man was learnt, when his dead body was found by a stockman in the Snowy River in a state of decomposition. It is supposed that Mr. Slocombe lost his way in the bush, and either in the dark or by some mischance in the day time, fell over a cliff into the river. [8]

SAD DROWNING CASE.
LADY RIDER FAINTS WHILE CROSSING A STREAM.
BRUTHEN, Tuesday.
On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Slocombe, residing 14 miles from Buchan, attempted to cross the Snowy River on horseback, with the intention of visiting a friend, Mr. Hicks, living on the Orbost side of the river. While crossing the stream Mrs. Slocombe was seized with giddiness and, falling from her horse, she was swept away by the strong current. Her husband attempted to rescue her, but had to let go his hold, or both lives would have been lost, owing to the rocky nature of the spot. The body of Mrs. Slocombe was recovered shortly afterwards.
Mr. Slocombe's father was drowned near the the same spot a few years ago. [10]
