Coroner's Inquiry - 25 Sep 1925

CORONER'S INQUIRY.

Death of William Doyle.

Mr. E. A. May, P.M., conducted an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of William Doyle, a stranger to this district, who died as the result of a fractured skull in the Manilla District Hospital on Friday last, which injury was caused, it is believed, through a fall from a horse.

Dr. Rayson, Government Medical Officer, stated that on September 13 he received a call to Manilla District Hospital about 1 a.m. in the morning. There, he saw a man in an unconscious condition, smelling strongly of alcohol. Ordered appropriate treatment for him. Saw him later in the day and found him still unconscious, Discovered signs of injuries to the head. On the 17th he developed congestion of the lungs which proceeded to hypostatic pneumonia resulting in death on 18th inst. At intervals deceased was slightly conscious but was unable to get intelligent answers from him. Am of opinion that death was caused from a fractured skull, pneumonia supervening.

To the Coroner: — His condition was consistent with a fall from a horse. A bruise was found on the left side of the head and also another on the knee of the left leg. Am of opinion that deceased had been under the influence of liquor when I first saw him. From his condition it is probable that deceased was thrown from his horse and dragged a short distance.

To Sergt. Byrne :— At no time was deceased in a fit state to be interviewed by the police. Had been informed that he had a brother in the service of the Bank of N.S.W. and also that he had a sister named Barry living at Annandale. This information was received from nursing staff.

Constable Schuback stated that at about 7.30 p.m on September 12 while in company with Constable Whitfield of Somerton a man named Wise informed him that he had found a man lying on the road about two miles from Somerton, With others he helped to carry the man into the Somerton Hotel where he was found to be in an unconscious condition. I did not notice any injuries but the man smelt very strongly of liquor. His clothes were covered in dust and his trousers torn near the left knee. About 12 o'clock the same night brought the man to the Manilla District Hospital by car. Was later informed by a resident of Somerton that deceased's name was William Doyle and that he was employed by a dairyman named W. H. Roach. Also learned that the deceased had been drinking at the Somerton Hotel during the afternoon of the accident and had left at 5 p.m. and had gone home on horseback. Would say his age was about 45 years. He was of stout build, and had bald head.

To the P.M. — There was no reason to suspect foul play. Deceased seemed to be on good terms with everybody even though a stranger to the district. Am of opinion deceased had a fall from his horse.

The Coroner found that William Doyle died at the Manilla District Hospital on September 18 from injuries received on September 12, caused probably by a fall from his horse about two miles from Somerton.[5]
