Biography

Walter Kelsall Duncombe was born December 1878 in Long Cay, Crooked Island, Bahamas to the Reverend William Waddell Duncombe and Mary Augusta Armbrister Duncombe.

Like his brothers, he joined the Colonial Service and was resident justice in The Bight, Cat Island before 1903. He accepted a position in Nigeria, in 1905, as Supervisor of Customs, and by 1911, he was Provincial Collector of Customs in southern Nigeria. He was eventually promoted to Chief Controller, His Majesty's Customs, Lagos, Nigeria.

Walter K Duncombe married Dorothy Helen Smith, daughter of Robert George and Clarissa Anne Smith, 16 February 1911 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Charfield, Gloucestershire, England. The couple had a daughter, in 1913, they called Clarissa Mary Comfort Duncombe.

Walter Kelsall Duncombe, Freemason, died in Lagos, Nigeria 28 November 1931 at 52 years of age.
