John attended school at Whitehorse Road Infants School, Thornton Heath (1904), Whitehorse Road Junior School, also in Thornton Heath, (1907-10), and Portland Road Boys School in Croydon (1913-14).[3][4][5]
On 27th February 1922, John married Violet Annie Chapman in St. Alban's church, South Norwood. Both John and Violet were then living at her parents' house at no. 85, Whitehorse Lane; John was a butcher by trade.[6][7]
On the evening of September 9th/10th, John and his son, Kenneth, were visiting with Violet's parents at no. 85 Whitehorse Lane. It was the fourth successive night of bombing raids on London and environs. John and Kenneth were killed during that night's 8-1/2 hour long blitz.[8][9][10]
