Biography

Mary was born in 1882. She is the daughter of John Dunn and his wife, Catherine Hunt.

On her birth registration, she is listed as Mary D Dunn. Her father is described as a “huckster”, which matches his occupation in the 1880 census. This is part of the reason we can narrow her down from all the other Mamie Dunn’s, alongside her address (on Temple Street).

Mary is seen under her nickname, Mamie, in the 1900 census with her family.

On 14 July 1905 (Mary’s 23rd birthday), “Marie Elizabeth” Dunn married Daniel J O’Connell. Despite the difference in name, this is corroborated by her date of birth in the marriage record. Her marriage date has also been seen as July 19.

In the 1910 census, she lived with her husband, Daniel and her daughter, Margaret. They also had a servant, Alice Playford.

In September 1918, she was listed as her husband’s primary contact on his World War I Draft Registration. They were living in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

She has died by the 1920 census. Her husband was living in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with their children: Margaret, Girard, Daniel, Jack, and Kathryn.

She is buried with her sister, Nellie Dunn McHugh, in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Much of her family is also on the stone.

Mamie is easily confused with another Mamie Dunn who died in Philadelphia in 1902. She is a similar age, same name, and same parents names.

Research Notes

It is unknown when Mary/Mamie died.

While there are no dates on her headstone, her death date is November 1918 per a Find a Grave user. She likely died in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

She is definitely deceased by the 1920 census, as her husband is listed as a widower. Later that year, he married Mamie’s sister Nellie’s husband Bart’s sister Sarah/Sadie.
