Catherine was born in South Carolina probably in the 96th District, Laurens County, since that's where her family was living. She was the youngest of fourteen children born to Richard and Sarah "Sally" Pinson Duty. Family records say that she was born in about 1806, although there is no proof on the date. By the time she was fourteen, she had moved with her family to Widner, Knox County, Indiana.
After her father died, her mom married "Elder" John Parker, who was a widower, and moved her family to Coles County, Illinois. While living there, Catherine met and married Elisha Anglin on 21 July 1831. Elisha was a widower who had five children, ranging in age from three to thirteen.
In August of 1833, Catherine & Elisha headed towards Texas, as her stepfather was taking his preaching there (he had established the Pilgrim Church in Illinois). They built Fort Parker on the headwaters of the Navasota River late in 1834. Because of the Indian hostilities in that area, Elisha Anglin moved his family (along with two other families) to Fort Houston in the early spring of 1836. When he heard of the attack on Fort Parker, Elisha and three other men headed to Fort Parker and were in time to free L D Nixon, Lucinda Parker, and her two youngest children from the Indians. Catherine died the same year her youngest child was born, and Elisha married Orpha Bates James who had been widowed the same year.
Catherine and Elisha had three children, but the two sons born about 1832 and 1834 died as babies and there's no record of their names. Their third child was Rebecca Catherine who lived to adulthood and became a pioneer herself, when she took a wagon train out west. [1]
