George Henry Dwelle was born enslaved on January 26, 1833 in Columbia County, Georgia, United States. His father was Clark J. Cook, who was white, and his mother was Mary Thomas, who was also enslaved. It is thought that George took the surname "Dwelle" because his mother was living with a family of the same surname at the time of his birth.[1]
George "was a capable, industrious hand", and was working to buy his freedom. He was a carriage maker and during the Civil War, he worked at the arsenal in Augusta, and made caisons and gun carriages.[1]
In 1870, he was living in Augusta, Richmond, Georgia, working as a wheelright. His mother, Mary, was also living in the home.[2]
George was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, and in 1874, he was licensed to become a preacher. He was ordained at the same church where he was a member. His pastoral work took him to Sumter County and Albany, and then back to Augusta, where he stayed for 27 years. He served as the secretary of the Missionary Baptist Convention and also as the President of the General Baptist Convention.[1]
George married 3 times.[1]His first marriage was to Emma Barefield, who died in 1869.[3] His second marriage was to Eliza Dickerson on August 31, 1870 in Richmond County, Georgia[4], and they had the following children:
His third marriage was to Rena Davis on September 1, 1892 in Fulton County, Georgia, who was previously married to a man with the surname of "Watts",[5] and they had one son together named George Watts. In 1900, they were living together in Augusta, Richmond, Georgia.[6]

George's death certificate says his father was J.E. Dwelle. Since George was 95 years old when he died, it could have just been a guess. Who is J.E. Dwelle? Is this who his mother was living with when George was born?
