Biography

John was baptised on 27 Dec 1570 at Horsmonden. He is the son of Thomas Dyke.

From his will it is known that he married Mary (Unknown), which taken with the name Mary of one daughter implies that Mary was probably the wife of his children mentioned in the will and thus possibly his one and only wife. Thus estimate for year of marriage is about 1595, probably London (if the marriage ever be found please add with source).
The 4 children known from his will are estimated to have been born in the period of about 1595-1615, probably (City of) London and there may have been other children that did not survive him (If baptisms are found please add them with source).

He was a member of the Guild of Fishmongers London

16 jun 1615 Quitclaim: Thomas Dyke of Nendfield, co. Sussex, gent, Robert Dyke of Rippon, Yorks, gent, and John and Richard Dyke of London, merchants, to William Dyke of Frant, clerk [1]

by 1624 he is thought to be the same "John Dyke, of the Rich/Earl Warwick faction controlling the Virginia Company by 1624, owner of some privateering ships used by the second Earl of Warwick, and a deputy-governor of the Providence Island Company" see [2]

1630-6 he is considered to be the same John Dyke as mentioned as a core member who formed and funded The Providence Island Company see [3] and the same John Dyke, merchant named on i.a. page 59 Puritan Colonisation: The Providence Company see [4] and the same John Dyke mentioned on page 207, the last page of Part 3 (i) of Chapter 3: of a Thesis submitted to Hull University by John Christopher Appleby B.A. in August 1983 for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy entitled "English Privateering during the Spanish and French Wars, 1625-1630, see [5]

9 Apr 1649 he wrote his will as John Dyke, Citizen and Fishmonger of London, mentioning: being aged; his wife Mary; his 4 children Samuell Dike, Nathaniell Dike, Mary Dike and Elizabeth Dike; 2 leases held from the right worshipful Company of Fishmongers of London (whereof he is a member) of diverse messuages or tenements with the appurts situate in Billiter Lane in London.
He bequeathed all his messuages, lands, tenements and heredits. with appurts. in Edmonton (Middlesex) to his son Nathaniell Dyke and his heirs, being charged with the various annuities bequeathed.
He bequeathed to his son Samuell Dyke and his heirs all his share of lands in "Virginia, the Island of Providence, the Sommer Islands alias Bermoodore (Bermuda) or in any other plantation beyond the Seas" and all his "estates, interest, inheritance and demands whatsoever in and to the same and all houses edifices and buildings thereupon erected". His estate in England to be divided into 3 equal parts, 1/3 to Mary his wife, 1/3 to be shared equally among his 4 children, the other 1/3 to fund the payment of rents etc for the properties on Billiter Lane; the rent & profit from new houses build thereon to go his wife Mary during her life, thereafter the properties to be inherited equally between daughters Mary & Elizabeth.
Annuities to be charged on the Edmonton estate: 10 pounds p.a. Samuell for the term of 6 years after the decease of wife Mary; to daughter Mary Dyke an annuity of 8 pounds 6s p.a for 6 years and to daughter Elizabeth Dyke an annuity of 5 pounds p.a.
Rest and residue to wife Mary whom he made sole executrix.
Witnesses: William Small, Gabriell Jacke, Thomas Taylor and Chri: Farvell Senr. The will can be viewed here [6] or here [7]

8 Jun 1649 he was buried at St Matthew Friday Street, City of London [8]

8 Jun 1649 his will was proved at the PCC London on the oath of Mary Dyke, widow of the deceased & executrix

Research Notes

The burial of a John Dyke at Frant on 21 Mar 1613/4 [9] can not be him as he was alive when his father made his will dated 2 Jan 1614/5 and when his siter-in-law Joane (Walsh) Dyke wrote hers on 16 Oct 1632 (he is mentioend in the will as "my brother Mr John Dike of London, merchant".
It would seem he might well be the same John Dyke, Citizen & Fishmonger of London b.1570 and who died 1649 (this is currently being investigated as of 9 Feb 2022)

Hi Frank, What's the source for the middle name? Middle names were not really in use at this time...its often a sign that records of two people have been combined.

Dyke-773 and Dyke-497 appear to represent the same person because: My research has led me to believe that these two profiles represent the same person, my 11th great paternal Grandfather. I can provide the evidence if needed. I have taken a FTDNA Y-67 test and I have matched with 2 people with the surname Dike, one who descends from Cpt. Anthony Dike Sr. Ernie Dike Jr. and a person named David Dike without any shareable profile besides his email [email address removed] . Ernie Dike Jr. claims on FTDNA that William del Dykes, I is his earliest known paternal ancestor and I believe John Edward Dyke descends from William del Dykes, I or are at least from the same family.

The two profiles are now Merged.

If John Edward Dyke died on 9th July 1660 then it is impossible for him to be a son of Thomas Dykes born in 1480.

The Kent Dyke family are trying to establish a link with the Dykes of Cumberland (and Dovenby).

The extensive Dykes family records are held at the Cumbria Archive Centre in Carlisle http://www.archiveweb.cumbria.gov.uk/CalmView/TreeBrowse.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&field=RefNo&key=DBD
