Biography

John Dyson, father of the English composer George Dyson, was born about 1859 in Halifax[1][2][3][4][5].

In 1871 he is with mother "Mary A" (35) and father Jeremiah (a 36-year-old painter born in Halifax) living with grandparents (William Roper appears to be Mary's father) at 7, Birks Hall Lane, Halifax. He has already started to contribute to the family's income by running errands. John has a brother Arthur (aged 4) here, and a sister Sophia (2).[1]

In 1881, by now a blacksmith, he was living with his widowed mother Mary Ann, at the same address, a sister Lily having joined the family[2], (who pops up later, staying with John in 1901).

John was an organist and choirmaster at the local Baptist church, though later his son George remembered, "neither of my parents could play more than a halting hymn-tune. But they both sang in amateur choirs, were interested listeners, and therefore proud and pleased when I showed promise" [6]

By 1891 our blacksmith has his own place at 68 Lee Mount Road, Ovenden, Halifax, with his wife Alice, son George and daughter Bertha.[3]

In 1901 we find the family has moved along Lee Mount Road to No. 35. Son George has left home, and John's sister Lily is staying there.[4] There are Greenwoods living just down the road at No.29.[4]

Another move may have been enabled by John's elevation to "Foreman Blacksmith" - in 1911 they are living at 18 Heath Park Avenue, Halifax. There has been a new arrival since the 1891 census - son Herbert Vincent Dyson, aged 16. He does not appear in the 1901 census.[5].

Research Notes

George Dyson's father is described as a blacksmith in his Wikipedia and ODNB entries..
