Biography

Thomas was born in 1843. He is the son of Thomas Dyster and Kezia Summers. He was baptised in 1849 at Holy Trinity, Adelaide four years after his mother's death if this certification is correct. Kezia is named as his mother. A death certificate in 1906 for Thomas Robert Dyster of New Zealand stated that he was born in Adelaide in 1843 (mother- Mary- probably a mistake) so this is almost certainly Kezia and Thomas's son. The certificate states that he has been in NZ for 45 years which suggests he emigrated at around 18 yo. This a time of great flux in Thomas senior's life - he sold up his Adelaide property, then didn't move but married Sarah Jane Florance instead. Perhaps it is partly to do with his only son departing??. Did young Thomas live with his father at some point or was he fostered out like his sisters. He married Maria Wynn in 1881 aged 38 as below. Research. I will continue to plug away at this one. There are many references to Dysters taking ships to and from Victoria and Adelaide between 1840 and the end of the century. No names but often dates and sex. Mostly Thomas senior going about his trading and money making concerns, maybe his children, several daughters were married interstate. In 1853 there is mention of Mr Dyster, wife, infant and 10 year old, journeying from Vic to SA. [1]The dates almost fit with Isabella and her first child Sarah, born 1853 and 10 year old Thomas Robert. But what happened to him after that or before that, for that matter? A Thomas Robert Dyster marrying Maria Wynn in New Zealand in 1881. He was recorded as living in Dunedin in 1886 as an express proprietor. He died at Athol Place in Otago aged 63 on 7th December 1906. (right age for our man). Maria Dyster died on 2ndNovember 1919. They appear to have been childless and are buried in Northern Cemetery Dunedin. As yet i have found no immigration record. I have also seen on other family trees his death recorded circa 1918 in Wentworth NSW but have seen no evidence to support this.

Thomas and Maria married Aug 17 1881, most probably in Dunedin.

Maria Wynn was most likely the former wife of George Henry WYNN and who were married Jul 11 1867 at the bride's residence in Dunedin. The marriage entry will show parentage and "condition" and will hopefully confirm this. I have not been able to locate a NZ death/burial for a Maria Wynn and suspect this marriage is strongly the reason for that.
