Hiram Earles was born about 1838 in Pittsylvania, Virginia to John and Elizabeth Earles. He was first noted in the 1850 census of Pittsylvania with parents and siblings:

By 1860 mother Elizabeth may have passed away, as Hiram is shown in Whitmell, Pittsylvania with his father John and sister Virginia(Caroline V).

Brother Henry was shown on the same page of the census. Possible uncle Isaac Earles also on the same page of the record.

Hiram enlisted in the CSA on June 2, 1861, joining Company K of the 38th Virginia Infantry. Aforementioned Isaac Earles enlisted in Company K on the same day. Hiram spent about a week in the Chimbarazo hospital in Richmond in late May, early June of 1862. Hiram could have returned to duty in time for the Battle of Malvern Hill.

Hiram is also listed as serving in Company I of the 57th Virginia Infantry.

On May 17, 1869, Hiram married Sarah Crawley. The record showed her to be widowed prior to the marriage. Sarah had married had married James W. Ashby on January 15, 1861 in Henry County. James W. Ashby, who was born in Patrick County about 1840, died in Winchester, Virginia on September 8, 1864. He had enlisted in the 57th Virginia Infantry in 1861 as a Sergeant, and rose to rank of Lieutenant prior to his death.

In 1870 in Leatherwood, Henry, Virginia, Hiram was shown with Sarah and children: Hiram Earls M 32 Virginia Sarah Earls F 25 Virginia

  1. Lucy Earls F 6 Virginia
  2. Edward Earls M 0 Virginia

The 1880 Henry census would reveal that Lucy in the 1870 record was Hiram's step-daughter. A birth record for Lucy Jones Ashby shows her father was aforementioned James W. Ashby; a casualty of the Civil War.

Hiram Earles died on March 12, 1893 in Henry, Virginia, and was buried at the family plot in Axton. The application for his military headstone would note his service in the 57th Infantry, Pickett's Division. The 57th and the 38th were both in Armistead's Brigade at the Battle of Gettysburg July 3, being part of Pickett's Charge.

The application for a military headstone for Hiram Earles was signed for by J.H. Earles on July 18, 1931.

Children, grandchildren of Hiram Earles

The J.H. Earles who signed the military headstone application for Hiram is likely son Jason Hiram Earles, who was born March 25, 1882. Jason was living in Henry County in 1910 and 1920 and married Mary Oakes on February 19, 1924 in Henry County. The 1930 Martinsville, Virginia record shows Jason and Mary had daughter Catherine about 1925. Jason's World War I and World War II draft cards give his birth date. Findagrave shows he died on April 23, 1966.

Hiram's son Edward married Nora Griggs in Henry County on December 9, 1888. The 1910 census of Leatherwood showed Edward and Nora with seven children:

Ed Earles Head M 38 Virginia Nora Earles Wife F 35 Virginia

  1. Claude Earles Son M 16 Virginia
  2. Howard Earles Son M 14 Virginia
  3. Blance Earles Daughter F 11 Virginia
  4. James Earles Son M 9 Virginia
  5. Lewis Earles Son M 6 Virginia
  6. Bessie Earles Daughter F 4 Virginia
  7. Maggie Earles Daughter F 1 Virginia

By 1920 Edward and Nora were living in Tunstall, Pittsylvania. There were two additional children, Hallie 1911, Owens 1917. In 1930, still in Tunstall, it was just Edward, Nora, and Owens in the home. Edward passed away prior to the 1940 census, which showed widowed Nora in home of her son Lewis, daughter in law Alma, and four grand children: Lois Earles 1927 Virginia, Iries Earles 1930 Virginia, Carroll Earles Son 1932 Virginia, Martha A Earles 1938 Virginia

A September 12, 1924 Rockingham, North Carolina death record for a Jas. A. Earles , born in Virginia on July 16, 1879, could be Hiram's son. Parents noted in the record are Haims Earles and Sarah Jones. James was a weaver at a cotton mill, and was listed in Leaksville, Rockingham in 1900 and 1920. In 1920 record shows him with wife Bessie, and no children.
