Award-winning folk artist Earnest East brought Appalachian folk music to a wider audience at national festivals with his signature slip-chord fiddling, guitar, and banjo playing
Earnest Esker East was born on July 8, 1916 in Surry, North Carolina to Rosa C Hill and William J East.[1]
Earnest married Fannie Sutphin 23 Feb 1935 in Surry, North Carolina.[2]
East earned the Brown-Hudson Folklore Award from the North Carolina Folklore Society in 1988[3] and the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award in 1990.[4]
Earnest died on January 8, 2000, aged 83[5] and is buried in Round Peak Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Lowgap, North Carolina.[6]
