Biography

Charles was born 2 Apr 1840 in Ruscombmanor Township, Berks, Pennsylvania.[1][2] He died 22 Jul 1907 in Reading in the same county and is buried at Aulenbach's Cemetery, Reading. He and his family were members of Ebenezer Evangelical Church.

Charles worked on a farm in Berks County, leaving there when he was nineteen years old. He traveled to Fairfield County, Ohio. While there he learned the building business and met his wife.

The place of birth for Louisa, Celesta and Lucinda is not known. In 1870, Louisa and Lucinda both died and were buried in Aulenbach's Cemetery in Reading so the family was residing in Reading at that time. The next two children, Emma and Melvin were born in Ohio and Lillie was born in Pennsylvania.

Eventually Charles and Elizabeth settled in Reading, Berks, Pennsylvania. He spent the first eight years there first working as a butcher and later as a bricklayer. Then he began his own building business as a contractor. In 1887, he built a beautiful house at 416 N. 9th Street, Reading.

In July 1907, Charles was on a ladder repairing a chimney at 816 Douglass Street, Reading when he fell onto a pale fence. A 32 foot ladder had been placed alongside the building in a side yard. Mr.Eck, age 67, was followed up the ladder by his son, Melvin D. ,25 years old. After they had reached the top of the building, the elder Eck reached to one side to secure another ladder when he lost his balance. A small pale fence separated the two properties and as Mr. Eck fell, he dropped upon the sharp tips of the poles. His neck struck it squarely, and after landing on the pavement he gave a few gasps and passed away.

In his will, dated 20 Aug 1904, Charles bequeathed his estate to his wife except for a horse, wagons, tools and contents of his stable which went to his son, Melvin. The other children shared in the estate after the death of his wife.
