Birth
Sarah EDDIS (later EDDIE) was born in 1879 in Ballycrune Townland in the Parish of Annahilt in County Down, Ireland. She was the daughter of James Eddie, a farmer, and Jane Graham. Her birth was registered in the Lisburn Superintendent Registrar's District. [1] [2] Although her birth record spells her given name as "Sarah", other records show "Sara" (without an "h"), especially after her marriage.
Early life
Sarah was the youngest of ten children. At the time of her birth some of her siblings were almost 20 years older then her. Sarah's eldest brother Robert Eadie emigrated to New Zealand at age 18 in about 1880. He may have been joining their uncle James Graham (their mother’s brother) who had emigrated to New Zealand in 1864. Robert spent some 20 years in New Zealand before moving to Australia where he married and had four children. Sarah's brother James Eadie (Jr.) emigrated to the United States in about 1883 and settled in New York City. Her sister Mary Eadie travelled to the United States to join their brother James shortly after the birth of his first child. Mary would also emigrate to the United States permanently after the First World War.
Sarah's eldest sister Jane (Jeannie) Eddie married William John Shortt in 1890. They were married in Annahilt. Jeannie and her husband would live on a farm in Ballyworfy townland in the Parish of Hillsborough. They would have ten children.
For the 1901 Ireland Census, Sarah's parents and her remaining siblings were living on the family farm in Ballycrune. Sarah was not with them and no census record has at yet been found for her. She would have been 22 years old at the time.
In 1904, Sarah's sister Elizabeth Eddie married Edgar Ernest Beatty, a farmer in Ballycrune. They would have six children.
Sarah's brother Samuel Graham Eddie married Annie Patterson in May 1906. They remained on the EDDIE family farm and had seven children. In October 1906, Sarah's sister Rachel Eddie married Louden McCoubrey, a farmer from the Spa, Ballynahinch. They had two children.
Marriage
On the 10th of July 1906, Sarah Eddie, a full age spinster from Ballycrune, married John Wesley Browne, a full age bachelor jeweller from Belfast. They were married in Loughaghery Presbyterian Church in Cargygray townland by the Rev. John Nesbitt Moorhead. Sarah's father was listed as James Eddie, a farmer. John's father was listed as Robert Browne, a merchant. Their witnesses were Rachel Eddie and Andrew Gilmore. Their marriage was registered in the Lisburn Superintendent Registrar's District. [3]
Sarah and John did not have any children.
Sarah's mother Jane (Graham) Eddie died from a sudden cerebral hemorrhage in 1908 at the EDDIE family farm at Ballycrune. Rachel's brother Samuel Eddie was the informant, present at death.
In the 1911 Ireland Census, Sarah, age 28, was living with her husband at 583 Lisburn Road in Belfast. Her husband was an optician. [4]

Sarah's father James Eddie passed away from “old age” in 1922. Once again, Sarah's brother Samuel Eddie was the informant, present at death. Her father was buried in the Loughaghery Presbyterian Church Graveyard in Annahilt. Sarah's sister Jeannie (Eadie) Shortt died later that same year at the SHORTT family farm in Ballyworfy townland.
Widow
Sarah's husband John passed way in the 1940s.
Death
Sarah passed away in 1957. [5] Her probate record named her nephew William Eddie (son of her brother Samuel Graham Eddie) as the executor and presumed beneficiary:
Spelling of EADIE family name
The family name is spelled many ways in the records: EADIE, EADAE, EADDIS, EDDIS, EDDIE.
Sarah's father James Eadie’s 1861 marriage record spells his last name and that of his father as EADIE. Birth records in Scotland for first five children (1862-1869) of James Eadie and Jane Graham use the spelling "EADIE". After the family moved from Scotland to Ireland, they seem to have generally used "EDDIS" (birth records for five children born 1871-1879 and census records in 1901 and 1911). "EADDIS" appears in two 1874 death records. However, the spelling "EDDIE" appears in marriage records from 1890 to 1906 and goes on to be used as the accepted spelling for records in the 20th century (even by descendants in Australia, the United States and Canada).
Sarah's brother James Eadie (1865-1907) continued to use the original spelling of EADIE and his descendants in the United States used the same spelling (EADIE).
