George Eden is an Anzac who served in World War One.
George Eden Died of Wounds during World War I.
George Eden was born about 1898 in or about Sydney, New South Wales in what was soon to become Australia. His parents were John and Elizabeth Eden. (It is believed Elizabeth's maiden name was Waller, if any family member can confirm this it would be greatly appreciated.) His father had already passed away by the time George enlisted into the AIF in World War I.
He is one of 4 brothers who served in the Australian Army in World War I, he enlisted as an 18 year old in 1916 with Service no. 6749. His brother (#3738) Pte James Frederick Eden born in 1893, died of pulmonary influenza in Sydney in 1920. And their brothers (#4831) Pte Henry Robert Eden born in 1888 and (#5074) Pte John George Eden born in 1883 survived the war.
George Eden died from severe head wounds he received in action in August 1918 at Rouen in France. He is buried in the ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN. From The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper of Saturday 7 September 1918 we see his Death Notice as entered by his family in Australia:
EDEN.-Died of wounds, in France. August 35, 1918, George, dearly-loved cousin of Phoebe and Frank Ferguson, also Winnie and Alma, of Eden-street, Arncliffe.
EDEN.-Died of- wounds, somewhere in France. August 15, 1918. Pte. George Eden, dearly-loved son of Elizabeth Eden, brother of Molly, Stella. Elsie, Betsy, also brother of Jack (returned). Bob, Jim (on active service abroad), of Redfern, late Miller's Point, and Doris, Jack.
