Biography

Born in Queen, New York Colony of English Heritage

Jemima Edwards was born 27 Oct 1738 in Queens, New York Colony, daughter of Timothy Edwards and Ruth Talmage of Queens, New York Colony. She was of English heritage.

Marriage to Elias Alley of French Huguenot Heritage

She married Elias Allee/Alley. Elias Allee was born 11 October 1738 in New Rochelle, Westchester New York, British Colonial America, the son of Jean John Allé II (1692-1752), a Huguenot immigrant and Susanne Das, the daughter of Huguenot immigrants. Jean's surname has also been transcribed as Allee, Allie, Alli, Ally, Alley, etc. (with the accent aigu over the e mistaken for a dotted i). Elias used the spelling Alley as an adult. His father Jean was said to be born on an island off of France. His last name appears, alongside father-in-law Pierre Das, on a monument to Huguenot settlers in Hudson Park, New Rochelle, NY.

Elias Alley in New York Provincial Troops during French and Indian War

According to Muster Rolls for the French and Indian War/Seven Years War, Elias Alley (alongside brother William) served as a Private with the New York Provincial Troops Militia in Captain Peter Secord's Company. He enlisted 11 April 1758, age 20, born in New Rochelle (NY), occupation weaver, height 5'7", brown eyes, long visage. [Smith: 486] and [Muster: 82-83]

Elias Alley Revolutionary Pledge

In July 1775, Elias Alley signed the Revolutionary Pledge in Beekman, Dutchess, NY in support of the Revolution. [Blake:114] Children

Elias Alley and Jememi Edwards had eight children:

  • John Alley b. Jan 1763, Lagrangeville, NY; d. Coburg, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada
  • Elias Alley Jr b abt 1799 Dutchess, NY, d. 12 Jan 1841, Prince Edward Co, Canada; m. Mary Ann Savage
  • Moses Alley b. 31 Oct 1771, Jamaica, Queens, NY, d. 27 Sep 1842, Brownville, Jefferson, NY; m. Mary Acker
  • William Alley b abt 1773 d. 1830, Ameilasburgh, Canada
  • Phoebe Alley b abt 1774
  • Peter Alley b abt 1778
  • Elizabeth Alley b abt 1780

Please note the extended Allee/Alley family had many children with the same name, so each child may have had several cousins, an uncle, grandpa, etc with the same name as their own.

Relocation to Canada

Elias Alley, a farmer, was said to have moved to Canada (Ameilasburg, Prince Edward County, Ontario) due to the poor soil quality where he was living in New York, according to brother Henry's wife, Ann (Henry and Ann lived in Hempstead, Nassau, NY). Some of Elias' adult children remained in Canada.

Jemima Edwards Alley passed away in 1820.
