Lewis was born in March 1877 in Manhattan, New York. [1] He was the son of David Lewis Einstein and Caroline Falman Feistmann. [2]
He married Hélène Edwards née Ralli in 1904 at St George Hanover Square, London, England. [3]
He was briefly the US ambassador to Costa Rica for one month in 1911.
In 1921, he was appointed by Warren G. Harding as the ambassador to Czechoslovakia and served until 1930.
He was widowed in 1949, and married Camilla Hare Lippincott after 1951.
He passed away in Paris, France in 1967. [4] He was buried in Cimitero Evangelico degli Allori in Florence, Italy. Einstein's memoir A Diplomat Looks Back was published the year after his death. [5]
