Since Richard's parents were living in Stonington, New London, Connecticut, and since his marriage and the birth of his children took place there, I doubt the accuracy of the Hettinger North Dakota birthplace, particularly in 1719/20, 150 years or more before the settling of North Dakota.
He appears to have adopted Mercy's children from her first marriage, as they appear in the records with Ellis appended to their Carpenter names.
Little else is recorded about Richard, although land records might be revealing. His wife, Mercy disappears from the record after the christening of her son David. Whether this is due to death or to the scarcity of mention of women in the records unless they are marrying, giving birth, or inheriting isn't known. Richard later shows up in Preston, Connecticut several years before the Revolutionary War began. One source had him dying in 1764, but with no other information. It is at about this time that David goes with other Loyalists to Nova Scotia. Richard's death may have been the precipitating factor in that decision.
