Biography

Mary was born in 1826 in Cropton, Yorkshire England but she was christened there April 1, 1827. She was the daughter of Richard Ellis and Elizabeth Morley. [1] Mary was the fifth child for Richard and Elizabeth but she was their first daughter. Sources vary as to the exact year of emigration from England from 1827- 1829, but it is safe to say Mary was age three or younger when the voyage to New York was made by the family. Sources do indicate that the family settled in Puslinch in 1831.

On December 2, 1845 Mary married Duncan McDonald in Duff's Presbyterian Church in Morriston, Wellington, Ontario. [2]Mary's parents and Duncan's parents were neighbours in Puslinch. The couple settled on a farm in Dereham, Oxford County, Ontario, Concession 7 Lots 16 &17. [3] and had eleven children: Richard, Alexander (Sandy), Catherine , Ronald, Charlotte, Duncan, George, Mary, Archibald, Isabella, and Moses. Archibald and Isabella were twins. [4]

Duncan passed away October 6, 1880. Mary passed away January 22, 1902.[5]Mary died from chronic hepetitis. [6] Duncan and Mary are buried together in the Mount Elgin Cemetery. [7]
