Bernard and Mary Anna had planned to marry in June, but his mom died in April, leaving a child in arms. Mary Anna helped care for the child after she’d finished her domestic work for the day. Mary Anna’s mom said it wasn’t respectable for her to be over there all the time, so to keep up appearances, Bernard and Mary Anna married in May.
Came to America when 16 because Bernard was of upper class while she was “ just a domestic”
Legend has it that she came with one ham, which was stolen
Mary Anna and Bernard had 5 children: Mary (oldest and 2 years older than the next); Ben; Clare, Frank and Arthur. 15 year span between Mary and Arthur.
Died 7/1/1947 at 77 years old at home of myocarditis. Buried out of St Mark’s Church in St Mary’s Cemetary by Nurre Bros. Funeral Home
