Biography

Alfred was born to John Ely and Hannah Maria Everitt. His birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1848 in the Bury St Edmunds district.[1] He lived in Bury St Edmunds St James with his family as the youngest son and second youngest child.[2][3] He worked as a carpenter.

He married Mary Ann Regent and had it registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1870 in the Bury St Edmunds district.[4][5] Together they had at thirteen children.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

They lived with Alfred's parents and sister Fanny in 1871 with their one-year-old daughter Ada.[18]

By 1881 they had moved out, and Mary's sister Esther[19] and son was living with them. They lived at 31 Ely and Sturman Cottages.[20]

In 1891 Esther and William had moved out, and his siblings-in-law Thomas and Isabella (likely Mary's family) was living with them. Alfred and Mary had five more children within that decade.

In 1901 they had six of their children living with them and by 1911 it was their four youngest sons (Oliver, Spencer, Harvey, and Othniel). They still lived at 21 Eastgate Street by 1911.[22][23] In 1911, all of their children (except Charles Edwin who died as an infant) were still alive.

Alfred died at the age of 74 in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1922 in Bury St Edmunds.[24]
