Sophia E. Engel, daughter of James Engel and Mary Becker, was born on October 18, 1856 in Coblenz, Germany. ^{(See Research Note #1 below)}

Sophia married John C. Engel, son of Peter Engel and Marg Dehler, on November 16, 1886 in Madonnaville, Monroe County, Illinois. ^{[1][2] (See Research Note #2 below)}
Their children included

• Catherine "Katie" Engel (1888-????) ^[2], married William Duester 1915, had issue
• Magdalena "Lena" Engel (1889-1926} ^[2], married Anton Wierschem 1909.
• Mary V. Engel (1890-????) ^[2], married Joseph Koch after 1917, had issue
• John Engel (1892-1893) ^[3]
• Adam Engel (1894-1894) ^[4], died in infancy
• Elnora Louisa Engel (1900-1987) ^[2], married John Bernhard Dickneite about 1920, had issue

In June 1900, John (age 51) and Sophia (age 42) were living in Harrisonville Precinct, Monroe County, Illinois. Although the record does not explicitly say so, it does seem to indicate that he was a farmer, as a farm schedule line number was appended. Also in the home were four daughters: Katie, Lena, Mamie, and Anna; the three older children were attending school. It seems that there had been one other child that was born and died prior to that date. ^{[2] (See Research Note #3 below for full details)}

In October 1915, John and Sophia were living in Harrisonville, Monroe County, Illinois, when their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Wierschem of Madonnaville, Monroe County, Illinois, visited them. ^[5]

October 28, 1926 The Waterloo (IL) Times reported that Valmeyer [IL] residents Mrs. John Engel, daughter Mrs. Jos. (Marie) Koch, and her daughter Clementina visited Waterloo [IL] the previous Friday. ^[6]

Sophia died at the age of 79 on September 25, 1936 in Madonnaville, and was buried in Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Madonnaville. ^{[7][8] (See Research Note #4 below)}
