From Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania:

(Edward P. Cowan) His wife Mary was a daughter of James R. and Alice (Conover) English, and a descendant of the family that settled in Englishtown, New Jersey. Mr. English was a staunch Presbyterian and an elder in the old Tenant church. When a boy he was captured by the British, and was threatened with hanging if he would not tell where the Americans were keeping their powder. Though but sixteen years old at the time, he allowed his captors to string him up without flinching. He was afterward set free, and the British were no wiser for having met him. Of his family of nine children, Mary was next to the youngest.

Based on my research James and Alice English had a son on October 31, 1810 - the Reverend James Theodore English who married and settled in Liberty Corner, New Jersey. See https://www.mrlocalhistory.org/english-farm/
