Biography

Birth and Parents: Mamie Engram was born on 06 October 1898 in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama, United States. She was the daughter of John Robert Engram (1854-1899) and Missouri Frances (Hildreth) Engram (1858-1942).

Her father died about six months after she was born, so on the 1900 United States Census, Mamie was shown as the one-year-old infant daughter of the widow Missouri "Ingram." Mamie and her family were living in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama:.[1]

When the 1910 United States Census was taken, Mamie was 11 years old and living in the household of her mother in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.[2]

Mamie Engram and Herbert Singletary were married on 09 August 1917 at the home of Judge Will Byrd. Their surname was misspelled "Singleterry" in a newspaper account of the event.[3] There was an entry for a Herbert L. Singletary and Mamie Singletary in the West Palm Beach, Florida, City Directory for 1920.[4] They appeared together in the 1926 edition of the Clearwater, Florida, City Directory.[5]

A 1920 United States Census has not yet located. (See Research Notes below.)

When the 1930 United States Census was taken, Mamie and Herbert Singletary were living in Glenwood Subdivision in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida.[6]

According to the 1940 United States Census, Mamie and Herbert Singletary had been living in Thomasville, Georgia in 1935. Thomasville is in Thomas County, Georgia.

When the 1940 United States Census was taken Mamie and Herbert were living with Mamie's eighty-one-year-old mother, Missouri Engram, in her home in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.[7]

In 1942 "Mrs. Herbert Singletary of Enterprise" was mentioned in the obituary of her mother, Mrs. M. F. Engram, as one of her surviving daughters.[8]

Mamie's husband Herbert died in 1960 in Coffee County, Alabama.[9]

According to the 1940 United States Census, Mamie had completed three years of high school. At the time she would have been attending high school in Alabama, students graduated at the end of their third year of high school.

Mamie Engram Singletary passed away on 31 October 1977 in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.[10] She was buried in Enterprise City Cemetery, Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.[11]

As far as is known, Mamie and Herbert Singletary never had children.

Research Notes

When the 1920 United States Census was taken, a Mamie "Ingram" was living as a boarder in Jefferson County, Alabama, and working as a music teacher. Living in the same household was a woman named Jesse Ingram. Her relationship to Mamie is unknown to this writer. There is no definite proof that this Mamie Ingram is the same person as the Mamie Engram being profiled, but the ages do align. In fact, since Mamie Engram was married by 1917, it is unlikely this is the same Mamie Engram as the person being profiled here.[12] No other 1920 United States Census record has been found for Mamie Engram nor Mamie Singletary which correlate.
