Biography

In 1880 Joseph (age 7) was living with his parents Samuel (51) and Hanna (45) Ensminger and siblings Harry (16) and Jacob (10). All were born in Pennsylvania, and lived in Harrisburg in 1880. Samuel was a school teacher.[1] By 1900 he and mother Hannah A, born No 1834, are living with her sister Florence J, born May 1844. Both women are widowed. His birth date is shown as Feb 1872, and they are in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.[2] The sister's last name is obscured, but starts with a B and may end in "ine".

The 1910 census shows Joseph and Edith with their sons.[3]

Name Relation Status Sex Age Birth Place
Joseph Ensinger Head Married M 37 Pennsylvania
Edith B Ensinger Wife Married F 31 New Jersey
Ralph F Ensinger Son Single M 7 Pennsylvania
Samuel S Ensinger Son Single M 2 Pennsylvania
Hanna A Ensinger Mother Widowed F 75 Pennsylvania

In 1922 son Ralph Francis married Lillian Mae Schneck.[4] In 1931 Joseph and wife Edith Francis Ensminger are listed as the parents on the marriage documents of son Samuel Lester Ensminger.[5] Samuel married Pauline Jean Lindstrom.

Before the sons' marriages Edith passed away. In the 1930 and 1940 census Joseph appears with second wife Miriam P., born in Pennsylvania about 1884. [6] [7]

Miriam was Miriam F. Sweeney, daughter of Thomas Chalmer Sweeney and Mary Arms, according to a family genealogy. It gives her birth date as 16 Aug 1883 but does not give a date or location for her marriage to Joseph.[8]

Joseph's 1953 birth certificate names his parents Samuel Ensminger and Hannah Starr. The information was Ralph F. Ensminger, presumably Joseph's son, but the use of Samuel's middle name as Hannah's maiden name seems to be mistake.[9]
